a new order

A New Order is a proposal to extend British Museum and house a new permanent exhibition displaying objects relating to important historical female figures, a response to Judy Chicago’s ‘Dinner Party’.

The proposed follies will house a number of chosen artefacts, weaving into the existing fabric of the museum. The objective is to give new meaning to their history and challenge the historical association of the feminine and the domestic.

There is a significance to materiality and process in relation to gender - who designs it, who it’s designed for - fabric can be harsh where steel can be delicate. The Bauhaus women strived for weaving to be accepted as a form of high art rather than craft. I want to empty femininity of meaning by removing gendered stereotypes: the materiality of the scheme debunks these widely held views of materiality and processes.
